A Coleção de Micro-organismos, DNA e Células recebeu financiamento da FINEP (Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos) do Ministério de Ciência e Tecnologia, por meio do edital Ação Transversal – TIB – Centro de Recursos Biológicos 10/2007, para organização de todo o acervo e disponibilização para o publico em geral.
Em 15 de maio de 2012, a Coleção de Micro-organismos e Células da UFMG – CMC-UFMG – foi credenciada como fiel depositária de amostra do componente do patrimônio genético, referente ao processo no. 02000.001854/2011-8, gerando o aviso de credenciamento No. 090/2013/SECEX/CGEN, publicado no Diário Oficial da União, D.O.U., no. 122, de 27/06/2013, Seção 3, pagina 151 (anexo 3). Com este credenciamento, a Coleção de Micro-organismos e Células passou a receber depósitos de linhagens de micro-organismos de outras unidades da UFMG e de outras Instituições brasileiras. A partir do credenciamento pelo Conselho de Gestão do Patrimônio Genético (CGEN), a Coleção foi registrada na “Word Data Center for Micro-organismos” da “Culture Collections Information Worldwid” (http://www.wfcc.info/ccinfo/home/) sob o número 1029 com o acrônimo CM-UFMG (http://www.wfcc.info/ccinfo/collection/by_id/1029).
A Coleção funciona em uma área de 50 m2 no bloco P3 do Instituto de Ciências Biológicas da UFMG. Todo o acervo esta preservado em ultrafreezers a -80 oC (bactérias, leveduras e fungos filamentosos), nitrogênio liquido (leveduras, bactérias e células), água destilada estéril (fungos filamentosos – método de Castellani) ou liofilizado (bactérias).
